Tulips require a prolonged period of cold temperatures to trigger proper growth and flowering in the spring. In colder climates, this chilling period happens naturally in the ground over the winter. In warmer climates, particularly Zones 7–11, winter temperatures may not stay cold enough for long enough to provide the chilling tulips need.

Pre-cooled (or pre-chilled) tulip bulbs have been stored in temperature-controlled coolers to mimic this natural winter chilling period, allowing gardeners in warmer growing zones to successfully grow tulips without relying on consistently cold winter temperatures.

Once the pre-cooling period is complete, bulbs should generally be planted in late November or early December, depending on your growing zone and local weather conditions. Aim to plant when soil temperatures have cooled and about 6–8 weeks before you expect a hard ground freeze.

Pre-cooled bulbs can be planted as soon as they are ready or stored for a few additional weeks in a cool, dark, well-ventilated location between 34–50°F. Avoid storing them in a warm or sunny location, as this can interrupt the chilling they’ve received.

For best results, we recommend planting pre-cooled tulip bulbs no later than January 1.
